Nelly

Nelly had 4 designs selected for the show, so quite a lot of work !

Did the theme "made of money" inspired you at first ?

Not at first, but when I started my research I was attracted by the bank buildings and I wanted to use this inspiration for my design.

How did get started ?

I research in art book, internet, I then started to draw and tried different shapes

Tell us about your designs, what material did you use ?

They all are quite structural, I used cotton, net, fake leather in different colours, green, blue, orange and white to remind notes colours.

How was it to work on a budget ?

I didn't think to much about money, more about the aesthetic. I spend more than the budget I had but I was focused on the result.

How do you feel about showing your work ?

I am really excited, and a bit stressed about the little time I have left before the show to finish everything !

A last word ?

It made me more confident to work on such a project. it taught me to manage my time as I have to work on some other project in the same time.

It is such a great opportunity we have, all the extra cost, the time spent really worth it !

Morteza Vanzegani

Morteza only need to finish some details of his dress, so it is without any stress that he answers my questions.

Where you inspired by the theme "made of money" ?

Yes I was, I wanted to link it with the theme of Love as I noticed people attraction for money.

How did you get started ?

I started by drawing,  I have worked around the design to link it with love. I also researched at the V&A, I looked at antique money and shape of dresses.

Tell us about your dress, what material did you use ?

I used a Victorian shape for my dress with the crinoline and then embellished it with notes folded into heart shapes. It took a week and the help of 5 of my friends, art students, to finish it. I used calico, wires and laser printed paper.

How was it to work on a budget ?

It was difficult, I went over budget. but it worth it !

How do you feel about showing your work ?

I haven't really think about that. But I think people will like my work, so I guess I am pretty excited.

A last word ?

I learned how difficult and time consuming it is to work on such a detailed piece. However I loved the result and the emotional sensation.

Anna Cooper

Anna had 3 designs selected for the made of money project, she answer my question while working on one of her design as the show is in only 10 days.

What inspired you by the theme "Made of Money?

Fashion is quite a money oriented business and I think that it is interesting to work on that subject. I could have gone much more political but I chose to look at it more in a pure, aesthetic point of view.

How did you get started, what was your design process?

I started by brainstorming money: fans of money (head piece); collar (restriction, opulent, statement), Abacus ... Then I started drawing. The "made of money" came just after we had a drawing workshop with Adrian Taylor... so it was a continuation in my work to use drawing as a design process.

Tell us about your design, what material did you use?

As I said the shape of my designs came through my drawing process. I also absorbed ideas of my research. I visited the Fan museum at Greenwich and the Money Gallery at the British Museum.
I used different material, calico printed by heat transfer, plastic, wood, wool, cotton. I recycled a lot of the materials I used.

What was it like to work on a budget?

It made me think more about the material I should use, where the money should go. That’s one of the reasons that drove me to recycling. Budget makes you think how to work differently.

How are you feeling about showing your work to people?

I am looking forward to the catwalk presentation and seeing all 3 of my designs.
There are lots of last minute finishing details to my garment as they are very labour intensive but I am enjoying the process.

A last word?

I think that it is an amazing opportunity World First is offering us. I like having a dead line, it is a great experience to have before the final project we will have at the end of the year and having pictures of a show in my portfolio is great!
